Off to London to see the Queen

What do you get a woman who has everything? Her own palaces even.
Prime minister Stephen Harper and his wife Laureen are to meet the Queen on Wednesday at Buckingham Palace and their gift for the occasion is a wooden pedestal bowl.
It’s made of “woodlace” birdseye maple and walnut and was carved by Garry Bowes, a woodturner from Ottawa who was a former research technologist at the Canadian National Research Council for many years.
The Harpers have brought their kids, Ben and Rachel, along on this trip. But there is no word yet if they will get to meet the Queen and Prince Charles.

Tanks Should be Rebuilt in Canada

OTTAWA– Despite promises from the Conservative government that military contracts will be awarded to domestic firms, Defence Minister Peter MacKay has decided that refurbishment of the long-awaited Leopard 2 tanks will be completed in Europe.
“The troops have been waiting to benefit from these tanks and the Canadian economy could also benefit from the work needed, but now we will have to wait for the Europeans to do the work, with no benefit to the Canadian economy,” said Green Party Leader Elizabeth May.
The Green Party calls on Public Works Minister Christian Paradis and Industry Minister Tony Clement to refuse to support this decision which sees $1.2-billion of taxpayer’s money going out of the country in this time of economic uncertainty. This tank refurbishment was supposed to create jobs in Canada, and was meant to be completed in time for the tanks to be of use in Afghanistan, where they are urgently needed. Now it looks as though both of these needs are not going to be met.
The tanks were purchased two years ago, with then Defence Minister Gordon O’Connor proclaiming the upgrade and maintenance of the tanks as a significant opportunity for Canadian industry.
“As we saw when the contract for paratrooper knives was taken away from a small business in Pictou, Nova Scotia, and given to a Chinese company, our military procurement policy seems to be ‘go with whoever is the cheapest’. Our troops deserve better than that. Our country deserves better than that,” said Ms. May.
