CHECK AGAINST DELIVERY
Good morning ladies and gentlemen. Thank you, Premier Campbell for your kind introduction. Greetings to John Furlong, Chief Executive Officer of the Vancouver 2010 Organizing Committee, to BC Lieutenant-Governor Point and to Deputy Premier Hansen. Greetings as well to mayors Robertson and Melamed of Vancouver and Whistler respectively. I’d also like to acknowledge the presence of Gary Lunn, Canada’s minister for sport. And of course, special greetings to the respected Aboriginal leaders and many other distinguished guests joining us this morning.
Before I begin, I would like to take a moment to acknowledge the untimely passing of Canada’s 2010 Olympic chairman, Jack Poole. Many say were it not for Jack’s charisma and powers of persuasion, Vancouver-Whistler, British Columbia, Canada might never have been awarded these Olympic Games. So, on behalf of the Government of Canada, I would like to thank Jack for his tireless dedication to Canada’s Olympic cause. But we extend our thanks and our sincere condolences to the Poole family.
Ladies and gentlemen, as Prime Minister, it is an honour, indeed a great pleasure, to be here today in Victoria, as we celebrate the arrival of Canada’s Olympic Flame. Ignited by the rays of the sun at the Temple of Hera in Greece, this flame is emblematic of the spirit of the Games. It embodies the Olympic values of excellence, friendship and respect – values that resonate deeply with our national character as Canadians.
In touching down on Canadian soil for the first time today, this flame has rekindled the Olympic ember that has been glowing in Canadian hearts since Calgary ’88. The legacy of Canada’s first Winter Games lives on: the True North now boasts one of the strongest Winter Olympic teams in the world. And there is no doubt that Canada’s Olympians and Paralympians will build on that legacy as we host the biggest and best Winter Games in history!
Ladies and gentlemen, just as the Olympic flame blazes with promise and potential, so too, do expectations for an unforgettable international event. Canada has been waiting for this moment. From far and wide, Canadians are ready to welcome the world. And the path to Canada’s golden moment will be illuminated by this very flame.
Thank you.

CHECK AGAINST DELIVERY
Good morning.
Greetings to Jack Styan, Al Etmanski, and all the other members of the Planned Lifetime Advocacy Network who are joining us today. A warm welcome to the Minister of State for Democratic Reform, Steven Fletcher, who has been a passionate advocate for Canadians with disabilities in our government’s caucus.
Special greetings also, of course, to the man who was kind enough to introduce me – a man known and respected by Canadians from coast to coast to coast, please welcome Rick Hansen.
I’d also like to thank Richard Faucher and all the staff here at the Burnaby Association for Community Inclusion for hosting us here this morning. For more than 50 years now, the BACI has helped those with developmental disabilities pursue their interests and follow their dreams. Our government shares your passionate belief in the intrinsic value of each and every human being.
Like you, we know those with disabilities also have their unique contribution to make to society.
And like you, we are working towards a country in which all Canadians can realize their full potential.
Sharing in this journey are the family members of disabled persons who freely offer their encouragement and support. These men and women often make incredible sacrifices and carry tremendous workloads in the name of love.
It is not enough for our hearts to go out to the parents of disabled children. We have a responsibility to do what we can to ensure their loved ones lead lives as fulfilling as any other Canadian. That’s why, two years ago, our government launched a new savings vehicle to help parents plan for the long-term financial security of children with disabilities.
The first of its kind in the world, the Registered Disabilities Savings Plan (the RDSP) will, over time, provide billions of dollars to enhance the quality of life for as many as half a million Canadians with disabilities.
As we heard from Kathy and Rob, the Plan is providing peace of mind and hope for a brighter future.
I’d like to thank the Planned Lifetime Advocacy Network for its persistent and effective advocacy of the RDSP.
As those of you in this room know so well, Canadians with disabilities are capable of the most extraordinary of feats.
Paralyzed from the waist down at the age of 15, Rick Hansen is just one such example. From the parking lot of the Oakridge Mall here in Vancouver he began his extraordinary journey twenty-four years ago. It was a journey that would see him wheel an amazing 40,000 kilometres through 34 countries. A journey that garnered much-needed attention for disabilities while raising millions for research. A journey of one “man in motion” that served as a source of inspiration for people across the country and – indeed – around the world.
Every day, Canadians with disabilities are challenging society’s preconceptions of what is possible. While barriers still exist, people like Rick are a testament to what can be accomplished through courage and determination.
Through initiatives like the Registered Disabilities Savings Plan,
our government is helping Canadians with disabilities make even greater contributions to our country.
Thank you.

On Friday, the Olympic Torch officially landed in Canada.
A universally recognized symbol of the Olympic spirit, the torch’s arrival marks a defining step in our duties to host the world in Vancouver this February.
From coast to coast to coast, Canadians will have the opportunity to take part in the longest Olympic Torch Relay to ever take place in a single country.
The Olympic Flame will travel by land, air and water during its 106-day journey. As it heads towards Vancouver, it will visit more than 1,000 communities.
Over 90 per cent of Canadians will be within one hour’s drive of the Olympic Torch’s route to the games. Our Conservative government is encouraging all Canadians to show their Olympic spirit and support our athletes by going out to watch the Torch pass through their community.
The Olympics will bring Canadians and the world together. It promises to be an exciting time as we join our friends and families in cheering on our athletes as they go for the gold here at home.
The Conservative government is proud to support our athletes as we all prepare to host the world at the Vancouver 2010 Games.

Tories continue to dominate political financing (David Akin’s On the Hill)

Canadians are putting their money where their mouths are when it comes to political preferences. Data published late Friday by Elections Canada show the Conservative Party of Canada continues to dominate its political rivals when it comes to fundraising, just as the party dominates its rivals in opinion polls. For the three-month period ending September 30 — a…

Canadian Cons & TD Bank’s Climate Change Betrayal
October 31, 2009 by admin
Whenever new Canadian policy analysis on climate change arrives the domestic propaganda arm of the global resource sector and its courtiers mechanically respond.
An economic study on greenhouse gas targets and climate policy [full report] in Canada has been released by the Pembina Institute and the David Suzuki Foundation.
Reports like these, highlighting needed action by Canada to preserve our well-being and safety, have been coming out for years. This time, however, the report was commissioned by TD Bank, an emblem of small-c conservative thinking and an organization that is otherwise taken quite seriously. Defenders of our artificially profitable and dangerous status quo are particularly agitated by this.
One of Canada’s finest apologists and Conservative Senator-in-waiting John Ivison writes on the report for the struggling National Post. He begins by absurdly providing some career advice to TD Financial’s chief economist, Don Drummond, then proceeds, saying:
[His] mistake was to ask two environmental groups, the David Suzuki Foundation and Pembina Institute, to author the report. It would be fair to say that neither group is particularly well-disposed toward the Conservatives — in fact, at the last election Mr. Suzuki backed the carbon tax plan put forward by Stéphane Dion’s Liberals. The loathing is mutual — one insider called the two organizations “official opponents of the government.”
I’m not exactly sure how one’s disposition toward a particular government’s policies has anything to do with the legitimacy of their research. Please note that Mr. Ivison does not challenge the legitimacy of anything in the report, but rather the report’s authors. Ivison, as far as I can tell, has no problem with the content of the report.
Ivison then makes unsubstantiated claims that the government will “get even” with TD through the ban on bank co-marketing of insurance products or see federal and provincial government business drop.
He quotes TD’s Drummond: “We have an obligation to analyze economic matters that will affect our own business and that of our clients. We have always done this.”
David Suzuki’s foundation should not have been involved, Ivison says, because Suzuki has been critical of the Conservative’s government’s policies. Anyone familiar with global climate change and policy would be critical of the Conservative record. This should not effect the substance of the report, which again receives no comment from Ivison. This is too ridiculous to discuss any further.
The propaganda machine isn’t limited to the media. Corrupt and prostrate politicians, fat from campaign contributions and with budgets falsely buoyed by a rotting economic model, are quick to pipe in. Ed Stelmach rejects any policy action that will limit his arbitrary measurement of “economic growth” for a certain set of favoured Albertans and global firms. This is, of course, too difficult to say succinctly.
Stelmach mutters something about getting “blood out of a rock,” unaware of how disgustingly vile that is, considering the human impacts of his policy choices.
The report suggests negative impacts on parts of Alberta’s economy could be mitigated by equalization payments. This is a reasonable means to address the $117-million equalization gap that distracts the Premier.
Canada must take action on climate change. We can expect more unsubstantiated attacks and veiled threats from those who worship money and power. There is too much at stake for those who profit from destruction and ignorance for them to be honest or just.

"The ‘Yes’ side does not have enough to form a country…" (Bowie’s Blog)

No doubt Pauline Marois knows what day it is today. Watching the PLQ’s numbers collapse in Quebec , one wonders what excited separatists are plotting. Fourteen years ago tonight Canada was glued to its TV sets to see Quebecers vote on the most strangely worded referendum of all time . Watching the video is eerie, not only because Peter Mansbridge looks exactly the same, but also because I…
